Keys to this prayer for depression are breathing slowly - that's the physical; and accepting yourself - that's the spiritual. It's not whether or not we can love Jesus, or anyone else; but that Lord Jesus will love and accept us - no matter how depressed we feel within: No matter how much we have condemned ourselves.
A simple form of prayer when prayer seems impossible or whenever you want to pray simply
Do you have depression symptoms? If so, take a depression test. It is important to seek help - it's too easy with the shame and humiliation to keep it to yourself.
Beyond seeking professional help for depression - which is the right thing to do first up; there is the spiritual side to depression which also needs urgent attention - before letting things slide too far. Let's face it - it's hard to pray at the best of times, let alone when we feel least worthy. I feel that the real key is allowing yourself to be incapable of helping yourself. Just as admitting to yourself the need to seek help outwardly from a caring professional with experience in depression is vital: so is to admit inwardly the need for help. Many people probably know the Jesus prayer - along the lines of, " I've lost control over every part of my life, and ask you Jesus to come and be the Master in my heart and help me - because I can't help myself". Well it's true - and one of our chiefest blessings, should we come to that point in our life. You have to really mean it you see. It's no good asking for a quick fix and temporary relief from our depression and stress - we really do have to mean it.
To survive depression - and to look back and count being depressed as one of your chiefest blessings - act now - outwardly and inwardly. Outwardly, seek help straight away from your MD/GP. Inwardly, try to let yourself breathe slowly and pray from your heart - quietly until a sense of calm comes - and ultimately until a "still, small voice" comes - telling you that it will be all right - and it will be.
